Priya Sandhu  – World Duty Free Birmingham Airport

What did you do prior to commencing apprenticeship?

I was employed by my current employer as a replenishment assistant

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I wanted to further my skills and knowledge within World Duty free, so that one day I would be able to progress and become a replenishment leader. I knew the apprenticeship would give me the skills I needed to become a great leader.

What did you hope to gain from the apprenticeship?

I hoped to gain confidence and learn new skills to become a successful leader.

What have you learnt as a result of the apprenticeship programme?

I have the ability and confidence to manage projects and a team, and I am able to delegate tasks, whereas before I would try to manage it all myself.

I also have a better understanding of how the Company works as an organisation, in order to survive in the current market.  I know what is required to motivate my team and now have the skills and knowledge of how to become a positive role model for my team. I am also aware and have an understanding on how to manage a conflict situation and what leadership styles can help me to motivate and coach a team. I am more confident in dealing with difficult situations, I am able to manage my time better and now able to remain calm and act in a positive manner. I now have an understanding of the importance of data management.

What additional progress of responsibilities have you taken on during the programme?

I have been able to act as a support team leader, in order to gain an understanding of the responsibilities, the role requires. Briefing my team, delegating tasks to my team, organising tasks which need completing due to organisational goals.

What was the best thing about apprenticeship and the most useful/interesting part?

I enjoyed the project management module. Planning and carrying out the project was very interesting and relevant to my job role, and therefore I was able to learn more about the company. I was able to understand how to extract data for my project, as well as use this data to create KPI’s for my team. During Covid whilst unable to work I was still able to continue learning and the zoom training sessions helped me to apply learning to the course and my workplace.

Sarah and Cathy (trainers) have been brilliant in helping me along the way and preparing me for my EPA.

What impact has the apprenticeship programme had on you?

My confidence has increased and my skills and knowledge for leadership

What impact in your opinion has this programme had on your organisation?

This has had a major impact on my organisation, as I have been able to support the company during the pandemic, and lead teams when leaders are on annual leave.

What have you enjoyed about the apprenticeship?

I have enjoyed setting myself goals and targets to reach. I also enjoyed creating a project, which was an area of interest and specific to my job role. The time management module was an interest, as it has really helped me to manage my time not only in work, but also outside of work.

How will completing the apprenticeship help you in progressing your career?

I have been promoted and received salary increase and hopefully further career progression
